Shine On You Crazy Diamond Parts VI–IX 12:29
Part VI 4:40 (0:00)
(written by Wright, Waters, Gilmour)
Instrumental
The roaring wind serves as a segue from Wish You Were Here to the second Shine On section. The wind is reminiscent of One of These Days, and the bass line here seems to be a more mellow reworking of the bass from that song. Next comes keyboard work from Rick, followed by Dave's slide guitar which delivers two choruses of portamento bottleneck lines over the new 12/8 shuffle feel, setting up the move to Part VII.
Part VII 1:16 (4:41)
(written by Waters, Gilmour, Wright)
Lyrics:
Nobody knows where you are
How near or how far
Shine on, you crazy diamond
Pile on many more layers
And I'll be joining you there
Shine on, you crazy diamond
And we'll bask in the shadow
Of yesterday's triumph
Sail on the steel breeze
Come on, you boy child, you winner and loser
Come on, you miner for truth and delusion, and shine!
Part VIII 3:04 (6:05)
(written by Gilmour, Wright, Waters)
Instrumental
Part VIII starts out with a finger-picked arpeggio variant of Syd's Theme, but this soon gives way to a jazz/funk jam in G minor.
Part IX 3:41 (8:40)
(written by Rick Wright)
Instrumental
A synth pedal point slowly begins to fade in at 8:40, the beginning of Part IX, while Part VIII fades out. Part IX is reminiscent of the very beginning of the piece, and brings it full circle in a slow 4/4 time. See Shine On parts I–V for quotes and other information concerning the full piece.
