Chapter 24

Chapter 24 3:38
     (written by Syd Barrett)

Lyrics:
All movement is accomplished in six stages
And the seventh brings return
The seven is the number of the young light
It forms when darkness is increased by one

Change returns success
Going and coming without error
Action brings good fortune
Sunset
The time is with the month of winter solstice
When the change is due to come
Thunder in the other course of heaven
Things cannot be destroyed once and for all
Change returns success
Going and coming without error
Action brings good fortune
Sunset
Sunrise

All movement is accomplished in six stages
And the seventh brings return
The seven is the number of the young light
It forms when darkness is increased by one

Change return success
Going and coming without error
Action brings good fortune
Sunset
Sunrise (4x)

Lead vocals: Syd Barrett
Backing vocals: Roger Waters

Syd Barrett: "That was from I Ching, there was someone around who was very into that, most of the words came straight off that."

The title of the song refers to the fact that, as Syd mentioned, most of the lyrics for this tune were drawn directly from the 24th chapter of the Chinese book of philosophy and numerology, the I Ching. The 24th chapter is titled Fu, meaning change/success. This piece was probably recorded in June 1967. It was re-released on The Best of the Pink Floyd in 1970, and re-re-released on Masters of Rock vol. 1 in 1974. Both were European-only releases.

  1. You have Roger listed as singing most of Rick's parts on Piper.

  2. I think the verse is "thunder in the upper course of heaven".This would make more sense in terms of the I Ching hexagrams
Still I could be wrong ;)
