Pink Floyd Live at Pompeii
Live recording and filming 23-31 May and June 1972
* Premiered at the Edinburgh International Festival September 1972
OVERVIEW
Additional filming in October 1972 for later releases
Film of the band playing at Pompeii's ancient amphitheatre
Nick Mason: "The Pompeii film's had a history nearly as long as the [Roland Petit] ballet. Whenever it's about to be premiered, Adrian Markham [sic] the director rings up and says, 'Listen I must have just a bit more film.' We've been adding little bits to it for ages."
Roger Waters: "It's not a bad film. I saw the final version in New York. What it is, is just us playing a load of tunes in the amphitheatre at Pompeii interspersed with rather Top of the Popsy shots of us walking around the top of Vesuvius and things like that, and it was a bit of an elbow. Since then he came to London and shot us in the studio for a couple of days, which has made it much more lively and it's quite an entertaining film. I think Pink Floyd freaks would enjoy it. I don't know if anyone else would. I liked it because it's just like a big time movie."
Circa 1989:
Dave: "It's the kind of film that they should just show once on late-night television. I don't think it holds up on videotape."
Nick: "It's a very interesting film, actually."
Rick: "The only problem was the director."
Robert Smith and the Beastie Boys are fans of this film.
