Beset By The Creatures Of The Deep

Beset By The Creatures Of The Deep 6:15
(written by Waters, Wright, Mason, Gilmour)

Instrumental

A smooth segue introduces the true beginning of the adventure. The hero has entered the Other World, and encounters his first obstacles — evil creatures barring his way. The title of the piece implies he is underwater, or perhaps deep underground. At the premiere performance of the Journey (14 April), an actual 'creature of the deep' made an appearance during this song, adding realism to the proceedings:

Miles: "... a sea-monster sprayed in dark silver paint lumbered up the aisle, tapping some of the audience on the shoulders, climbed on stage, stared at the flowers along the edge of the stage for a while, then disappeared backstage."

Beset by the Creatures of the Deep is yet another version of Careful with that Axe, Eugene (the fifth). At the climax of the piece, it is easy to visualise the hero battling the monsters, Roger's screams becoming their death cries. Another nice segue follows, as the wind of The Narrow Way fades in at 5.53 into Beset, the bass comes in slowly at 6:04, and at 6:15 Beset ends and The Narrow Way itself begins.
